On Friday august 2nd, at 12:00pm-1:30pm, Dr. Paulette Brown Hinds will engage in conversation with Steven Waldman of Rebuild Local News and Maya Chupkov of California Common Cause. We will discuss a range of statewide policies currently impacting the media industry, its impacts in our region and opportunities for us to continue rebuilding our media ecosystem locally.

Maya (she/her) is the Media & Democracy Program Manager at California Common Cause. She has served as the Director of Strategic Communications at the Public Advocates Office at the California Public Utilities Commission and as the Communications Director for the Council of Community Housing Organizations (CCHO), where she played a pivotal role in the passage of San Francisco’s Community Opportunity to Purchase Act. Maya hosts Proud Stutter, a disability justice podcast, and serves on the Board of Directors for the National Alliance of Community Economic Development Associations (NACEDA). She holds a Master’s in Public Affairs from The University of San Francisco and a BA in Global Studies from the University of California Santa Barbara.
Steven Waldman is the founder and president of Rebuild Local News and the co-founder and former president of Report for America, a national service program placing journalists in newsrooms across the country. He has a background in journalism, having covered national politics for Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, and Washington Monthly. Steven also wrote a significant report for the Federal Communications Commission on the information needs of communities.
