Letter to Editor 24 February 2023

LULAC District 5, in the Inland Empire, is an affiliate of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), which is a national civil rights organization with membership chapters throughout the nation, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties.

Last week, the California Attorney General‘s office announced an investigation into whether the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department has violated the civil rights of the residents it is sworn to serve.

Our prior efforts to work with Sheriff Chad Bianco have produced zero change in improving the safety of Riverside residents. He has instead chosen to ignore community input and continue with business as usual.

We applaud and welcome the Attorney General’s investigation. It is long overdue.

Our organization believes that Riverside County residents deserve a law-enforcement agency that they can trust to enforce the law and keep residents safe, not trample on their rights.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office cannot continue operating in a manner that continues to put the community at risk unabated.

We look forward to the outcome of the investigation and implementation of required reforms.
