John W. North High School is preparing to celebrate the completion of a $61.5 million campus transformation project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The  transformation project was largely made possible with funding provided by Measure O. Measure O is a $392 million bond approved by more than 70% of RUSD voters in 2016 to upgrade and improve district campuses and classrooms, including building new facilities and schools. The Measure provided $50 million in funding to the transformation initiative.

Riverside Unified funded the project’s remaining $11.5 million through the federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund, which supported HVAC and lighting system upgrades.

The ribbon cutting event scheduled for Friday, December 19 between 9 and 10:30 am will be held at John W. North High School, 1550 Third Street, Riverside. It will mark the grand opening of an eight-classroom science building and a new 18,327-square-foot competitive gymnasium building.

The project also includes restroom modernizations, campus entry enhancements, and ADA accessibility improvements. Additionally, seven buildings received HVAC renovations, along with new ceilings, lighting, flooring and paint.

The event will include performances by the John W. North High School Chamber Singers and remarks from Principal Jodi Gonzales, Riverside Unified School District (RUSD) Superintendent Dr. Sonia Llamas, and the RUSD Board President, who will be appointed at the Board’s Dec. 18 meeting.
