On Saturday, August 10, 2019 more than 100 family members, friends and neighbors gathered at Anne Shirrells Park Community Center in San Bernardino and joined Emma Shaw in celebrating 107 years of life. Born August August 9, 1912 in rural Louisiana, as a child Shaw frequently missed school to help her family pick cotton. She gave birth to 13 children including two who died at birth. According to Shaw, she worked well into her sixties at whatever jobs she could get in places across the country from Louisiana to Las Vegas, Nevada, Palm Springs and San Bernardino. Along the way Shaw helped raise six generations of church and community leaders. Throughout the celebration Shaw sat quietly and attentively on her ‘throne’ (her wheelchair) at a decorated table that soon overflowed with cards, flowers and love. Throughout the event Shaw was responsive to the constant flow of people wanting to secure a photo-record of this moment in her-story. The IE Voice/Black Voice News joins the family and friends of “Grand-Ma” Emma Shaw in congratulating this amazing matriarch on her 107th birthday.
