As the 2023-24 school year begins, Fontana Middle School is not just starting another year; it’s celebrating a significant milestone. The school, which has been an integral part of the community since September 1928, is now marking its 95th year of operation, making it the city’s oldest continuously operating school.
On the first day of school, a special ceremony was held in the auditorium to commemorate the occasion. Principal Marco Garcia, wearing a jersey with the number “95” proudly displayed, greeted the students with high-fives as they walked onto the campus, brimming with excitement and anticipation.
Throughout its rich history, Fontana Middle School has played a vital role in shaping the lives of thousands of local residents who attended the school. Many of its alumni have gone on to become influential leaders in the community, a testament to the school’s lasting impact.
The school’s journey has been remarkable, with a fascinating connection to the city’s education landscape. For nearly 25 years, graduates of Fontana Middle School had to attend Chaffey High School in Ontario since there was no high school in the city until Fontana High School opened in 1952.
While the campus still houses some of its original buildings, the school has undergone numerous upgrades over the years to adapt to changing educational needs. Notably, the G Building was constructed in 2007, offering modern facilities, including flexible science labs and classrooms.
In 2012, significant modernizations were carried out that included revitalizing the auditorium, gym, and locker rooms, ensuring that the school remains a vibrant and relevant learning environment for its students.
Principal Garcia expressed his excitement about the future, eagerly anticipating the grand celebration planned for the school’s centennial milestone in 2028. As the school continues to evolve and inspire generations of learners, it remains a cornerstone of education in the community.
