Overview: Republican Congressman Ken Calvert of California’s 41st Congressional District represents a diverse district that includes wealthy communities and areas with higher rates of poverty. Calvert’s voting record shows he supports the economic agenda of Donald Trump, which could further exacerbate the economic vulnerability of his constituents. The House budget resolution, which Calvert voted for, is expected to include more extreme cuts to social programs, impacting a large number of constituents. It is time for Riverside residents to pressure Calvert to represent all his constituents, not just the wealthy ones.

Republican Congressman Ken Calvert represents California’s 41st Congressional District.
Although the 41st Congressional District includes much of the wealthy, majority-white sections of the Coachella Valley which encompasses the more affluent communities of Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, and Indian Wells, it also includes many of the inland region’s not so affluent communities including parts of San Jacinto, Corona, Norco, Lake Elsinore, Canyon Lake, portions of both Perris and Temecula Valleys which includes the communities of Menifee, Wildomar and parts of Murrieta.
But, if you look at the voting record of Congressman Ken Calvert, you would think his entire constituency consists of the wealthy elite. The truth is however, despite the wealthy sections of this congressional district, the overall demographic and economic vulnerability of many of Calvert’s constituents and their needs, are contrary to the votes he continues to cast in support of the catastrophic economic agenda currently being pursued by Donald Trump.
Last week, Calvert proved once again that his interest, as it relates to representing the majority of his constituency, is cravenly tilted away from those in need and in favor of the most affluent who will continue to benefit from existing tax cuts and are primed to benefit from future tax cuts.
“Perhaps representation in politics is only a fiction, a myth forming part of the folklore of our society. Or perhaps representation must be redefined to fit our politics; perhaps we must simply accept the fact that what we have been calling representative government is in reality just party competition for office.”
Ryan McMaken
Meanwhile, this is why I say Calvert is not representing the majority of his constituents. According to the California Budget and Policy Center, at least 34% of residents in the 41st Congressional District are enrolled in Medi-Cal (California’s version of Medicaid); nearly 71% of the district’s children are eligible for free or reduced-price meals at school; nearly 11% of his constituents depend on CalFresh nutritional benefits; and more than 4,000, 41st District residents sought homelessness services in the past year. Meanwhile, nearly 54% of 41st District constituents are people of color, including Latino, Black, Indigenous, Asian; nearly 20% are foreign born; and no less than 11% live in poverty.
It is also important to keep in mind that any proposed budget cuts will be on top of the indiscriminate slashing of federal jobs already underway by Elon Musk. The Trump Administration has expressed the desire to aggressively reduce the federal government workforce under the direction of Elon Musk and his DOGE team.
It is difficult to get an accurate assessment of the number of government employees impacted to date because of the back and forth indecision by the Trump Administration in relation to some of the layoffs. Although a recent report by Reuters notes that nearly 200,000 employees have been fired, marked for termination or have accepted buyouts, though other reports say as many as 280,000 federal employees and/or federal contractors have lost their jobs due to this process.

Also last week, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Trump administration’s quest to fire 16,000 probationary federal employees. This is expected to open the flood gates for even more firings, layoffs and/or retirements of government employees.
Now, the nation must wait while the wayward Republican House members decide where to make the cuts. Overtime it is expected to seek about $5 trillion dollars in tax cuts and over the decade it is expected to add about $5.7 trillion to the national debt. To help offset the tax cuts the Senate called for a minimum of $4 billion in spending cuts. The House on the other hand increased the budget cuts in its bill to $1.5 trillion. It is unclear where Congress will settle when the two bills are reconciled.
Although there remains a lot of work to do before the budget is final, it is the unknown details related to potential cuts in the nation’s safety net that have everyone on edge. So, when Calvert voted with the Republicans last week to pass the House version of the FY25 Concurrent Budget Resolution, a bill that included more extreme cuts during this time of economic need and uncertainty, it put us on notice that it’s past time to pressure Calvert to do the right thing.
The House budget measure passed by a mere two votes, 216-214. One of the 216 “yes” votes belonged to Calvert. It is time for Riverside residents to let Calvert know that we are watching. We must let Calvert know–that we know–that he knows voting to cut social programs will impact a large number of constituents in CA’s 41st Congressional District that he swore to represent.
This is a call to action for inland area residents to be relentless about calling, writing, faxing Calvert and demanding that he do what he was elected to do–represent all of his constituents, not just those who belong to his millionaire boys club. Until the bill is final he can still make a difference in how it is structured as he sits on a number of important committees in Congress.
This must be more than a one time call. I encourage you to be relentless. You know the story about the squeaky wheel. This is also an important reminder of what can happen when we don’t vote… the majority people of color in the 41st Congressional District are today subjected to the will of the minority who went to the polls and voted for Calvert in 2024
Of course, this is just my opinion. I’m keeping it real.
