Assemblymember Dr. Corey A. Jackson will host a Juneteenth event titled “Black Consciousness: A Juneteenth Celebration of Black Literature and Literacy” on Saturday, June 14, from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM at the Moreno Valley Public Library.
The event will highlight the official reading list of the Black Panther Party and the significance of Black literature in preserving cultural history and advancing representation in public spaces. The session will include book displays and remarks from Assemblymember Jackson and others.
All books featured during the event will be from the official reading list of the Black Panther Party that were personally purchased and donated to the library by Assemblymember Jackson. Many of these works have been banned in other parts of the country.
Commenting on efforts across the country to censor and erase Black history Assemblyman Jackson stated in a press release, “There is a growing effort to silence Black voices and remove our history from the shelves. I donated these books to make sure our stories remain visible and accessible to everyone. Black literature is essential to understanding where we’ve been and where we are going. It must be protected, shared, and celebrated.”
The Moreno Valley Public Library is located at 25480 Alessandro Blvd, Moreno Valley, CA.
