The Rialto Unified School District (RUSD) hosted its remarkable annual Black History Celebration at Wilmer Amina Carter High School on Saturday, February 24, 2024. Themed “Celebrating Unsung Heroes,” the event showcased the rich diversity and heritage of Black history, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of the RUSD education communities.
The afternoon celebration featured a wide array of performances that paid homage to African American culture and achievements. Attendees were immersed in a cultural journey through music, dance, poetry, and powerful speeches, with a special focus on the District’s Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program. Keynote speaker Rev. Sam Casey, alongside poet Brandon Allen and special guest, National Football Defensive End Kenny Clark from the Green Bay Packers, provided inspirational messages that underscored the event’s theme.
Rialto USD Board President Joseph W. Martinez reflected on the day’s significance, stating, “A Black History Celebration that made history. The District African American Parent Advisory Council (DAAPAC) the students, staff and Families of the Rialto Unified School District made this a celebration to remember. Thank you to everyone that made this an historic event.”
The successful execution of this year’s Black History Celebration is attributed to the
collaborative efforts of the DAAPAC, students, staff, and the Family and Community
Engagement Team. Their dedication to creating a memorable experience exemplifies RUSD’s commitment to celebrating diversity and fostering a deeper understanding of Black history and culture.
Superintendent Dr. Cuauhtémoc Avila expressed his gratitude, stating, “The Black History Celebration is a vivid representation of our education community’s dedication to recognize the profound contributions of African Americans. This 8th Annual Black History Celebration succcess was due to the tireless efforts of the DAAPAC and our District’s leaders who highlighted the rich tapestry of resilience, strength and culture.”
