Teachers can still register for Student Mock Elections

Sacramento, CA

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson has invited teachers to sign-up for their schools to participate in California’s MyVote Student Mock Election, scheduled to take place on October 11, 2016.

The purpose of the program is to help students become active voters as soon as they are old enough to vote. “Practical voting experiences, such as the MyVote Student Mock Election, can go a long way toward establishing civic participation as a lifelong habit,” Torlakson said.

California students who participate in the Mock Election will “vote” for US President, US Senate, and several of the Propositions that will be on the November General Election ballot. Results will be reported to the Secretary of State’s office and made available online. Schools registered by August 20 will receive a mock election tool kit by mail. Teachers can register their school online at: sos.ca.gov/elections/student-mock-election/.
