Support for Gas Tax Repeal is Fading . . .

Despite ongoing and aggressive efforts to repeal the state’s new gas tax, the Republican sponsored repeal initiative, Proposition 6, appears to be falling short of the votes needed to pass on November 6. A recent poll showed only 41 percent of likely voters support the repeal initiative, while 48 percent oppose it. The gasoline tax increase signed into law last year by Governor Brown, included a 12-cent increase in the base gasoline excise tax and implemented a new transportation improvement fee based on the value of one’s vehicle. The goal of the increase was to raise an estimated $52 billion to cover the state’s transportation needs over the next ten years.
