Outside Groups Helped Shape America’s 2016 Political Landscape

A number of political pundits believe that when all monies spent during the 2016 election cycle are counted, results will indicate that more than seven billion dollars were spent nationally. Perhaps the most notable story about the gross amount of money poured into this year’s campaigns was how the amount of spending by outside groups dominated several key races and accounted for one of every five campaign dollars spent. This election cycle, outside groups outspent candidates in 33 congressional races and spent 47 percent of all spending on U.S. Senate campaigns.
