A primary objective of the nation’s Environmental Protection Agency has always been to clean up the country’s heavily polluted federal waterways. However, hard-fought protections of the nation’s most valuable resources are now the focus of the anti-environmental Trump Administration.
In 2015, the Obama Administration updated the nation’s Clean Water Rule, which dates back to the early 1970s. The administration simultaneously expanded federal authority to include all navigable waters protected under the Clean Water Act, and therefore also protected the drinking water of at least 117 million Americans.
On Tuesday, EPA Director Scott Pruitt, a Trump appointee, issued a plan to fulfill an Executive Order issued by Trump early in his administration that called for dismantling the 2015 expansion of the Clean Water Rule.
