Climate Impact on Personalities

Climate Impact on Personalities

Riverside—A new study by social and cultural psychologist, Lei Wang, at Peking University in Beijing suggests that, “People’s personalities may be shaped by the temperatures of the places in which they grew up.” This, according to Wang, could mean that as climate change influences temperatures around the world, shifts in personality may follow.

Although the impact geography may have on personalities has been suggested in previous research, the cause of such personality differences has remained unclear. Wang and his research team suggested because temperatures vary markedly around the world, “this factor might shape personality by influencing people’s habits.” For example, temperature might have an impact on whether people like exploring their surroundings, interacting with others, trying new activities or engaging in collective outdoor work such as farming.
