A Monster Solar Flare

by admin on 17th-September-2017

Riverside-As hurricane Irma roared through the Caribbean and prepared to wreak havoc in Florida, as wildfires raged across the western United States, and two days before Mexico experienced its strongest earthquake in a century—an 8.2 on the Richter scale—on Wednesday, August 6, the sun had its own rare event, releasing two powerful solar flares. A solar flare occurs when there is an eruption of high energy radiation from the sun’s surface. According to Science magazine, the second one was the most powerful flare in more than a decade.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center, the solar flares resulted in radio blackouts and a loss of low frequency communications used in navigation for approximately an hour.
